Teeth Cleaning and Check-ups in London, Ontario

Even with careful brushing and flossing, plaque builds up in places you can’t reach and hardens into tartar that a toothbrush can’t remove. Regular professional cleanings and check-ups remove that buildup, catch problems while they’re small and cheap to fix, and keep your teeth and gums healthy for life.

At Lunar Smile Dentistry, our hygienists and Dr. Adel Elbaz see patients of every age, with appointments until 9 pm on weekdays and on Saturdays, so cleanings fit around work and school.

What happens at a cleaning and check-up

The hygiene appointment

  • Health review. We check for changes in your health and medications, which can affect your mouth.
  • Gum check. We measure the small spaces between your teeth and gums to look for early signs of gum disease.
  • Scaling. We remove tartar (calculus) and plaque from above and just below the gum line.
  • Polishing. We polish away surface stains and leave your teeth smooth.
  • Flossing and advice. We floss between your teeth and show you any spots your routine is missing.
  • Fluoride, if it’s recommended for you.

The dental exam

  • Checking every tooth for cavities, cracks and worn or broken fillings
  • Digital x-rays when needed, to see between teeth and below the gums
  • Oral cancer screening of your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat and neck
  • Bite and jaw check, including signs of grinding
  • A clear plan. If anything needs treatment, we explain what and why, show you on screen, and give you the cost.

Plaque and tartar

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth constantly. The bacteria make acids that cause cavities and irritate the gums, which leads to bleeding and gingivitis.

If plaque isn’t removed, minerals in your saliva harden it into tartar (calculus) within days. Tartar is rough, holds more plaque, and can’t be brushed off. Only a professional cleaning removes it.

How often should you have a cleaning?

  • Every six months suits most adults and children.
  • Every three to four months if you’ve had gum disease, build up tartar quickly, smoke, have diabetes, or are pregnant.
  • Once a year may be enough for some people with very healthy gums and few cavities.

We’ll recommend an interval based on what we see, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Comfortable cleanings

  • Tell us if your teeth or gums are sensitive; we can work more gently, use a numbing gel, or freeze an area.
  • If it’s been a long time since your last cleaning, we may split the work into more than one visit.
  • If you’re anxious, ask about laughing gas or a virtual reality headset.
  • If your gums have pockets below the reach of a regular cleaning, we may recommend scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning done with freezing.

Your routine between visits

  • brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste
  • clean between your teeth once a day with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser
  • limit sugary snacks and sipping on sweet or acidic drinks
  • don’t smoke or vape
  • replace your toothbrush every three months

For the whole family

  • Kids: gentle cleanings, fluoride and sealants. See children’s dentistry.
  • Teens with braces: extra help cleaning around brackets.
  • Adults: cleanings around crowns, bridges and implants, and gum care.
  • Seniors: cleanings for natural teeth and checks for denture wearers.

Families can usually book back-to-back appointments. See family dentistry.

Cost and coverage

Cleanings, exams and routine x-rays are covered by most dental insurance plans, usually with limits on how often. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) covers preventive care including cleanings, and we bill it directly. Our fees follow the Ontario Dental Association fee guide. If you have benefits left at the end of the year, it’s a good time to book.

Common questions

Why do my gums bleed when I floss?

Usually because of inflammation from plaque (gingivitis). Gentle, daily flossing and a professional cleaning usually stop the bleeding within a couple of weeks. If it doesn’t, we’ll check for gum disease.

Is a cleaning painful?

For most people, no. Some areas can be sensitive, especially if it’s been a while. Let us know and we’ll adjust.

Do I need a cleaning if I brush well?

Yes. Even excellent brushers build up tartar in some areas, and check-ups find problems you can’t feel yet.

Can I get my teeth whitened at a cleaning?

A cleaning removes surface stains. For a whiter shade, see teeth whitening; new patients can choose whitening as their free gift.
