Since the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) opened up, it has become the most common topic at our front desk. Many people calling us have not seen a dentist in years, and the first question is almost always the same: will this be covered?
Here are straight answers to the questions we hear most often.
What does CDCP cover?
CDCP covers most everyday dental care, including:
- Exams and x-rays, so we can see what is going on
- Cleanings, polishing, fluoride and sealants
- Fillings for cavities
- Root canal treatment
- Gum (periodontal) care
- Extractions and other oral surgery
- Dentures
Some services need approval from the plan before we can start. We check that for you and tell you the answer before any treatment begins.
What does CDCP not cover?
CDCP is designed for health, not cosmetics. Treatments like teeth whitening, veneers for appearance, and Invisalign for cosmetic reasons are generally not covered. If a treatment you want is not covered, we will tell you the cost up front so you can decide.
Why do some patients still pay something?
There are two reasons you might see a cost:
- Co-payment. Depending on your adjusted family net income, CDCP may ask you to pay a percentage of its fee. Your co-payment level is in your Sun Life welcome package.
- Fee differences. CDCP pays its own set fee for each service. If a clinic’s fee is higher, there can be a difference.
We go over both with you before treatment. Nobody should find out about a cost after the fact.
Do I need my card before I book?
No. You can book as soon as you are approved. Your coverage starts on the date in your Sun Life package, so bring your member ID once you have it and we will confirm coverage before we treat anything.
Can I use CDCP for an emergency?
Yes. Emergency exams and treatments such as extractions and root canals are covered services. If you are in pain, call us at 226-884-2573. We are open six days a week, with evenings until 9 pm on weekdays, and we keep time open for same-day emergencies. Read more about emergency dental care.
What should I bring to my first visit?
- Your CDCP member ID (or card)
- A list of any medications you take
- Any other dental coverage you might have, even if it is through a spouse
- Questions. Write them down; first visits go fast.
You can also save time by filling in your medical history form online before you arrive.
Is CDCP worth using if I haven’t been to a dentist in years?
Absolutely. Many of our CDCP patients are coming back after a long break, and nobody here will lecture you. The first visit is about finding out where things stand and making a plan you can afford, one step at a time.
The short version
If you have CDCP, you can book with us like any other patient. We bill the plan directly, explain any cost before we start, and see patients of all ages. New patients also get complimentary professional teeth whitening with their first exam.
